Ben Working

Last night while making Kitty Egg Candles, Ben had a little accident and splashed beeswax all over his face! It was horrible. Earlier that day he burned himself while making porkchops too. Poor Ben! We have beeswax splatter all over our workroom blinds now. Ben said it looked like a crime scene of a bumble bee stabbing.

Beeswax apparently doesn’t come out of hair so he had to lather up with olive oil to get it out- now his hair is all greasy.. *sigh* All for the sake of these cute little candles…

Kitty Egg Jumbo-sized
These are the “originals” for the Kitty Egg Candles (made with crayon wax!). They look like they’re at a party. There’s one kitty egg in the background flat on his face, like he is passed out.

4 month anniversary
This is actually our 4 month anniversary picture. A bit late but better now than never! Mikah is just under 23lbs here! As you can see his entire self takes up nearly my entire torso already. I sometimes carry him in the MOBY wrap but really he prefers being on Ben as there is still room for him to nestle into his chest. It’s just uncomfortable when I wear him- our heads keep bumping into each other like a 2 headed beast of some sort. We sometimes put him in a stroller but really would like to carry him around more without killing our backs. I usually opt to carry him in my arms.

So far we’ve tried a *really* old fashioned sling (hand-me-down) that is just too bulky for Mikah, Baby Bjorn which worked when he was smaller but digs into our shoulders now that he’s heavier, and the Moby which works OK but is inconvenient as far as putting him in it and taking him out goes. A back carrier might do the trick…

If anyone has a suggestion on a really great baby carrier I’d love to hear it!

Also as a side note, Ben has entered “the grey one“, Lulu, into America’s Most Lovable Pets sponsored by Wheel of Fortune and PEOPLEPets.com .. Maybe she’ll win :}

Tsumori Chisato for Shu Uemura

September 3rd, 2009 | Posted by Kitty Baby Love in For Mommy - (0 Comments)

Did I ever mention that I have a BFA in Fashion Design? Well, I do. One of the few designers I admire is Tsumori Chisato. I just love her use of colors, prints, and the handmade drawing-like quality to her design. Apparently she is releasing a line of makeup by Shu Uemura inspired by her own adaptation of the classic novella,  Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) in collaboration with Shu Uemura.

It includes: a mini brush set in a gold bag ($72); two palettes of blush and eyeliner ($75 each); a highlighter compact ($53); three shades of lipstick ($36); a quilted makeup bag ($88); and studded fake eyelashes ($72). source

If I had the extra spending money, you bet I’d pick up a set. But until then, onto the “wish list” it goes…

Breast is Best

August 21st, 2009 | Posted by Kitty Baby Love in About Baby - (2 Comments)

Breastfeeding has been such an amazing experience for me and Mikah. I started leaking a couple of months before he was born, so I had no fears about producing or not producing enough milk when he did come. What was unexpected was the gorge a few days after his birth when my “real” milk came in. It felt like I had horrible breast implants! 3 weeks later my nipples were still tender, but I refused to give up and I am glad I didn’t. Now breastfeeding is no longer painful, but joyful, and there are no words to describe the bonding between him and I.

The list of benefits from breastfeeding is extensive, including:

  • fewer allergies
  • high IQ
  • protection from asthma
  • fewer each aches
  • saving money
  • convinience
  • better teeth
  • bonding

Really, there is no reason someone who is capable of breastfeeding to not do so.
This post is inspired by One Love,  from which the following photos are also taken…

Surrender: “heidi and hans – nap time”

CHRYSALIS

Hungry crying
stirs me out of dreams
into a dawn
of musty canvas, damp
pillows, ribs that ache.
I crawl over the breath
of a sleeping husband, stumble
out of the tent into a thick
morning

to sit on the ledge, legs curled
against the moss, feeding a warm
baby who nestles
his cheek against my breast,
milk dripping
from the sides of his mouth
as he drifts into sleep.

In the marsh that stretches before me, cattails touch
the mist. Jewelweed opens to warmth. And I wonder

what other woman in what other time sat here
like this, her sleeping son cradled
in the crook of her leg,
watching the great blue heron rise
from her nest, weaving herself
into the pattern of dead leaves and new ferns,
eyelids closed, chin raised

touched by the sunrise, drenched
with the morning,

waiting

awakening

Happy Breastfeeding!

Hello, Portland

August 11th, 2009 | Posted by Kitty Baby Love in Family Life - (2 Comments)

Ben, Mikah, the 3 cats, and I have relocated to the beautiful Portland! We’re loving spending the end of summer here in our new home. We are also enjoying having NO SALES TAX! Oakland had a 9.75% sales tax charge so it’s quite a nice change to have. We’re also happy to extend this no tax-ness to our customers. Horray for Portland!

Here are some pics from our drive up. Most noteable a mural Ben did almost TEN YEARS AGO that is still partially visible today. This will be the last time we will see it for a while so I took a shot while driving by on the Highway. If you’re in the Bay Area, check it out sometime!

Original photos from 2001. The mural reads “As they sail, they go through ups and downs but always remain balanced” and features 10 illustrated steps on how to make a paper boat. The top left text reads “Boat Journeys.”

And here it is in 2009! Unfortunately there has been some (really ugly) graffiti over it, but I find it pretty amazing that you can still see a good portion of it almost a decade later…

Goodbye rolling yellow California hills….

Lulu likes high places. She’s been jumping onto Ben’s shoulders since she was a kitten. Now she is 10 years.

Look how peaceful she is…

Happy Father’s Day

June 21st, 2009 | Posted by Kitty Baby Love in Family Life - (0 Comments)

To the father of our family,

Happy Father's Day

Thought bubbles:
Lulu : “Om” I like to refer to Lulu as “on retirement.” She is 10 years old, Ben’s Beloved (he sings her more love songs than he does for me), hates cats; loves people, sunbathing, relaxing, sunbathing, and more relaxing

Blaquan : “?” Blaquan is our little “it” child. She was originally going to be put down because she was “unsociable” or something, but Ben saved her and 4 years later, she has surrendered herself to human companionship. She is still highly skittish though and always a little bit lost… meow? meow?

Me : “<3" Always and forever

Mikah : " ( . ) ( . ) " Booby. Milk. Hungry all the time.

Vasia : " *food* " Oh Vasia, my crazy little fat cat. Vasia is like a dog- intelligent problem solver, a little manic, attention seeker (demander), and eats just about anything. She often does naughty things to get our attention so we can feed her. Spray bottles and sticky tape mean nothing to her.

And that is our little family.

Hope you are all having a beautiful Father's Day!

Mikah

MIKAH

On May 18th at 2:56am,

after 9 hours of labor,

Mikah Sage C. gracefully sailed his way into this world via a gentle home water birth.

It was the most incredible experience I have ever had.

Ever since Mikah’s emergence, I feel as though I am walking through a dream. My days are a kaleidascope of tiny white pearls of breastmilk at the tip of nipples, seedy mustard yellow wet diapers, tiny pink lips in shapes of upsidedown U’s crying, and bright brown almond shaped eyes staring off into the unknown.

…I can’t believe he is finally here!

9 months of incubation and a week of counting past the due date, and now he is here. This amazing spirit finally decided that it was time and made it’s way into this world. Ah, and now I can say that I am the mother of Mikah! …Miraculous.

Today we celebrate his 3rd week of life.

[And for anyone in San Francisco interested in a home birth, I highly recommend Awakenings Birth Services. They provided us the means to having our desired home birth. Such a blessing.]

Green Bee

May 15th, 2009 | Posted by Kitty Baby Love in Family Life - (0 Comments)

Ben found a green bee in our grassy area today! I almost didn’t believe him when he said he “saw the most beautiful green bee”

It was metallic green with yellow pollen filled legs. Beautiful indeed!
After a quick google for “green bee”, we learned that our little friend is called a Halictid bee, or sweat bee. It cools itself by continually regurgitating liquid and reswallowing it!

Ah, the air is warm and life is good. The kitties now bathe in the shadows instead of the direct sunlight, and our little plants are happily growing. Ben’s bamboo is shooting new shoots, the tomato plant is thickening it’s stalk and has a flower, our newly planted basil is beginning to sprout, and our avocado tree is shooting new leaves as well.

Now if only Mikah would arrive……
